| CLONAKILLA, HILLTOPS SHIRAZ John Kirk and his son Tim run this small family winery in the rolling hills north of Canberra. They produce a range of wines but their speciality is in the two varieties that originate from the Rhone Valley: Syrah (Shiraz) and Viognier. Clonakilla is probably one of the leading estates in Canberra and has the reputation as a leading Australian `boutique` winery. "This smells beautiful: raspberries, currants, apricot - really curranty - with earthy spice like szechuan pepper. Lovely raspberry fruit sweetness in the mouth with pips, chewy tannins, and fine oak mouth-aromas. A long, rich fruitcakey finish. …this is incredible value for money. (95/100)" - Tim White, The Australian Financial Review, June 10, 2005 |
