Christophe Peyrus took over his family’s vineyards in 1991 and Clos Marie is now considered to be at the top of the appellation by the French wine trade and press. The 20-ha vineyards are scattered around the terraces that rise from the village of Lauret up to the sharp cliffs that form part of the plateau of the Hortus mountain. The soils are clay and chalky limestone. The domaine has been farmed using biodynamic principles since 2000, and no pesticides or herbicides have ever been used.
“The Clos Marie of Christophe Peyrus and Francoise Julien is a superstar in the Languedoc firmament, and nothing I am about to write is going to change that, I can only confirm with awe!” Wine Advocate
"The Clos Marie of Christophe Peyrus and Francoise Julien is a superstar in the Languedoc firmament, and nothing I am about to write is going to change that, I can only confirm with awe! Their Coteaux du Languedoc Pic Saint-Loup Metairies du Clos Vieilles Vignes (Grenache, Cinsault and Carignan with 10% Syrah) smells and tastes strikingly of blackberries and plums with plum pits, iodine, wet chalk, and roasted meat. From the nose, I might have guessed “Pinot.” And come to think of it, this is incredibly refined in texture though decisively mineral, athletically lean and bright ... it begins to sound yet more Burgundian. But there are layers of pungent herbs, toasted nuts and roasted meat here that can only come from a Southern French environment. What dazzling, flare-like length this has – bravo!" Wine Advocate
