| "The 2005 Hermitage Cuvee Emilie is a big, tannic, broodingly backward wine with an opaque purple colour and a sweet nose of blackberry liqueur intermixed with pain grille, tar, and pepper. The deep, powerful flavours exhibit high tannin and crisp acidity. This will be a backward wine needing 4-5 years, and it will keep for up to two decades or more. Proprietor Philippe Desmeures, along with the Chave and Sorrel families, are among the very few small family operations still left in Hermitage. Hermitage, which only consists of just over 300 acres, is dominated by the large firms of Paul Jaboulet-Aine, Chapoutier, Delas, and Guigal, with very few small operations still in existence, but this is one of them. Desmeures has clearly moved into the more modern style of winemaking in the northern Rhone." Robert Parker 89-91pts |
